Piano and Corona

2020 has begun with an unexpected and unanticipated turn of events, and the world has found itself in a confusing situation with many questions and uncertainties.

Assuming we are healthy and interested in keeping our lives as normal as possible, here are a few ideas on how we can continue playing and learning the piano under the new circumstances.

Mental Hygiene
Our immune system is at its  best when we are relaxed and positive. Playing the piano is ideal for achieving this state of mind. Play your favorite pieces, find exciting new challenges and enjoy the gift of making music.

Piano Hygiene
Since we touch the piano keys when playing, we need to make sure the keys are clean. It actually makes sense to clean the keys regularly even without the new virus.  If there are several people using the same piano, make sure everyone washes their hands before (and after) playing.
At the end of a playing session or at the end of the day you can wipe down the keys with a cleanser.
Plastic keys are pretty easy to handle; ivory is more sensitive. You can consult with the piano tuner or the piano shop to find the best way to clean the keys.

Be careful not to let any moisture get between the keys, only clean the surface!

Online piano lessons
You may find yourself in a situation where in person lessons are not possible, with either the student or the teacher being in quarantine, or the regulations not enabling you to meet. In this case, online lessons are a good solution.
Here is the link to a pianoways post on how online lessons work.

Skype piano lessons take a bit of getting used to. They are different to in person lessons in many ways and it takes adjustments and good will on both sides to make them successful. Online lessons are a wonderful solution in many different cases, including this Corona crises.

Wishing everyone good health and I hope this post won’t be relevant for too long!
