The Dream of Playing Piano

Pianoways was launched exactly two years ago and has become an important part of my life. I started off by writing about the basic elements of piano playing and then branched out into wider topics. (Here you can see the order in which the posts were published).

For Pianoways' two year anniversary I would like to take a moment to observe how meaningful it is to people of different ages to play an instrument and, well, how great it is to play the piano.

A few months ago I happened to be in an empty classroom of 12 year olds and had time to wander around and read what they had up on the walls. One of the walls displayed a project about goals and dreams. Each student had a page where they wrote:

1. What they planned  to achieve in the near future and

 2. what they wished they could do.

A striking number of these pages had music as a wish item of the second category. "I wish I could learn to play an instrument", " I want to be able to play the piano", "I'd love to play in a band", etc. I was touched by this, and saddened. Touched to see how important music  is for these kids, and saddened, because it seemed like an unreachable dream to so many of them even at this early age.

When I tell people I am a piano teacher, the reactions are often pretty emotional. I get the impression that many people feel they missed out on something big by not playing in their childhood or by quitting at an early stage. I hear stories of all kinds:

- People who wanted to play but their families couldn't afford to pay for lessons 

- People who had teachers that took all the joy out of playing and quit, but who felt somehow cheated out of the real thing.

- People who were told at a young age that they are unmusical so should not bother learning to play an instrument.

The good news is that it is never too late  Music- and especially piano- can be learned at any age by anyone and where there is a will there is a way. If you are motivated, nothing will stop you!
